Recycling Education through Plastic Waste Pot-Making Training for Elementary School Students

Plastic waste remains a pressing global environmental issue, with Indonesia being one of the top contributors to ocean plastic pollution. Addressing this challenge requires environmental education initiatives that are practical, context-sensitive, and implemented from an early age. This community service project was conducted at SDI Hartaco Indah, a nationally certified Adiwiyata environmental school in Makassar, South Sulawesi, with the aim of strengthening students’ environmental awareness and skills through a hands-on recycling activity. The specific objective of the program was to train fifth-grade students to creatively repurpose single-use plastic gallon containers into functional flower pots. The method employed a combination of interactive lectures, live demonstrations, and project-based learning. Thirty students were divided into small groups to collaboratively execute the recycling process, which included cutting, painting, and decorating plastic materials. Observational assessments and teacher reflections were used to evaluate the outcomes. The results indicated that students showed high levels of engagement and teamwork, and successfully produced aesthetically pleasing, reusable pots that were displayed as part of the school’s green corridor. Furthermore, the project fostered pro-environmental attitudes, with students expressing a desire to continue recycling at home and teachers planning to incorporate similar activities into future extracurricular programs. The integration of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning domains through this approach demonstrates the effectiveness of hands-on environmental education in fostering sustainable behavior. This project serves as a replicable model for other elementary schools seeking to strengthen environmental literacy and support the objectives of the Adiwiyata program.
